Book: “Viktor Orbán’s Affairs with Women – The Illiberal Playbook: Gender, Power and Control”
March 20, 2026
Call for Applicants: “Democratization at Stake: Gender Equality Norms, Backlash, and Policy Futures”, Brussels, Belgium, June 9-10, 2026
March 30, 2026Within the frame of WG 1, we aim at compiling a special issue on Interdependencies of (Present) Anti-gender Politics and Past European Authoritarian Regimes.
Anti-gender politics based on ideological premises seem to be an important part of authoritarian/”illiberal” regimes across Europe and across the 20th and early 21st century and are part of populist discourses. We can observe that such regimes support images of (militant) masculinity at the same time. Are the rise of anti-gender politics and ideologemes and the rise of (militant) masculinities are intertwined as two sides of one coin? We try to discuss and understand whether there historical trajectories and continuities have consequences for the emerging movements of today, based on the idea of path-dependency in historical institutionalism.
The special issue will be submitted in a renowned journal with a double blind peer review process. In the case, we get more than 8 well written abstracts, we may decide to compile an edited volume in an outstanding international publishing house.
We expect abstracts and CVs of 300 words max. until April 30, 2026, the editors will give feedback until the end of May. We expect the submission of selected articles until the end of September 2026. Please submit your proposal to
Heidi.hein-kircher@rub.de and luismota.work@gmail.com
Best wishes,
Luis and Heidi
